What the space is
The Boathouse sits at the edge of the Lullwater, a narrow body of water in the southern end of Prospect Park. The building itself dates to 1905, designed by Frank Helmle and Ulrich Huberty in a Venetian Renaissance style. It underwent a major restoration in the 1990s and again more recently, and today it functions as a full-service event venue with the landmarked architecture intact.
The space accommodates seated events of varying sizes and works well for cocktail receptions, wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate dinners, and galas. The terrace overlooking the water is one of the more quietly spectacular outdoor settings in all of New York City.

Purslane is the Boathouse's exclusive caterer, which means that if you're hosting an event in this space, we handle the food and beverage. This arrangement has a practical benefit that people sometimes underestimate: we know the space exceptionally well. We know how the kitchen functions, what the flow of guests looks like at different event sizes, and how to manage load-in and breakdown without disrupting the park. That operational familiarity translates directly into a smoother event.
What we handle
Our role at the Boathouse extends well beyond the food. We manage rental orders (accompanying clients to showroom visits if they'd like), advise on layout and floor plans, and work directly with your event planner if you have one. Every element of your event's food and beverage — from passed hors d'oeuvres to late-night snacks — is under our care.
As with all Purslane events, our focus remains zero-waste and carbon-neutral. We handle all composting and recycling on-site, and no landfill waste leaves your event. If you want official documentation of your event's sustainability profile, we can facilitate TRUE for Events certification.
What works well here
The Boathouse has its own character, and certain types of events play to its strengths particularly well. Weddings with a Brooklyn sensibility — personal, high-quality, not overdone — tend to be a natural fit. The outdoor terrace is especially well-suited to warm-weather ceremonies and cocktail hours. Corporate events for organizations with a design or culture-forward identity work well in the space; the architecture does a lot of the atmospheric work for you. galas benefit from the venue's prestige and the emotional resonance of a park setting.
Summer and early fall are the peak seasons, but the Boathouse comes into its own in spring as well — the park's flowering trees and returning light make for a natural backdrop that the space is particularly well-suited to. Cocktail hours on the terrace in April or May, before the summer crowds arrive, have a quality that's hard to find elsewhere.
Purslane Cafe at the Boathouse
During the warmer months, we operate Purslane Cafe on the Boathouse terrace — open daily from 8am to 7pm, serving coffee, pastries, seasonal sandwiches, natural wines, and local beers.
